Subject: A great film (and book), but just part of the story
There was a sequel, "Colossus and the Crab." Spoiler ahead:
It all works out. When Colossus and Guardian united, they also sensed a force moving toward the solar system and earth called The Crab, and made a strategic decision to push humanity into cooperating in order to quickly build up defenses to protect Earth. They were actually benevolent and not malevolent all along

Subject: Finally found it again!
I saw this decades ago on TV. Wanted to find it again for a long time but I was told no streaming service has it. Well, I got a hunch and came here after signing up a year ago. So glad to see it again. As I understand, it was based on a short series of novels. I wonder what sequel movies based on them would have been like?

The 1970s had some of the best "we told you so..."movies. Everything from "Network" to "The Conversation" to "Soylent Green" (vast disparity of class). This is one of the absolute best. Skynet was patterned off of Colossus.
It's taken me decades to find this film. Tried every cable movie channels, DVDs, streaming services. When I talked about it, some people thought I was making it up! But you guys and gals has restored my faith in the internet. I can not thank you enough!

This movie's premise is way ahead of its time. That said, having worked in computers for almost 40 years now, I find the movie incredibly funny because of the tech used. I worked oin CDC equipment , all the humans had to do was wait, all the CDC stuff would need servicing withing 4 months, with no servicing it would all be dead within a year. Without making changes and upgrades, how did they ever think that system would run without human intervention, heck even today the premise of the original Terminator is funny. A mainframe? C'mon, outdated by the time of Judgment day in 1997.

Well, that was interesting, having seen this first on tv, many moons ago, the conspiracy guys will be disappointed that it is still available, one of the comments made in the media was that maybe a sequel was in the pipeline, l for one would like to see that,

sounds like it could be a prequel to the first terminator movie, especially with the defence computers becoming sentient just like skynet

Excellent and prescient, as others had notes, but also the computer systems shown all actually worked. Control Data Corp used it as a showpiece and loaned both the hardware and expertise to run and maintain it during shooting. A couple million in 1969 dollars just sitting there, at a time when a 4 bedroom home cost ~$20,000. Amazing tech for the time, especially for a movie.

A rare thing for the time - a film that is relatively accurate and prescient about the internet.
Still very much in the realm of science fiction - it's depressing to see the commenters here obviously taken in by the blizzard of venture capitalist hype currently in the media about supposed AI. What we have in 2023 is clever plagiarism software, that's all. We are as far from a system like Colossus as they were in 1970.

Possible Spoiler Alert:
For further information this new system goes way beyond sentient. Sentient still implies individuality. This new system is totally dictatorial with an absolutely new unity. A unity that has their own and brand new language. A unity that does not contradict.
Like:"The Six-Million Dollar Man": we have the technology.
I gave it the four stars for the simplicity of its production
Also I would give this movie a PG-14.

This is a film I have thought about off and on for years. A couple of days ago, I finally got around to looking for it and found it here. Hurrah!
When I first glimpsed the page, I noticed the view count was at 0. "How could this be?" I thought. "Surely this movie is more relevant than ever given the fact that artificial intelligence has moved from the realm of science fiction into everyday life."
The answer, of course, was that the film had been posted the exact same day I went looking for it after many, many years.
Uncanny.
